Spruce is solid and light, can spread sound faster and damp effects on sound from the high frequency. It is more suitable for panels of violins than other wood. Back panel should be made from hard and elastic maple. 2, As per workmanship. The whole line should be smooth, uniform and with moderate rounded edges. Side panel should be connected with panels tightly and the connection surface is uniform and smooth. Scroll and fingerboard should be in the same straight line. Back panel should be symmetrical for advanced violins. How about self-study of violin? Violin is one of self-study musical instruments, as long as you keep practicing 20~30 minutes everyday, you’re able to play a simple song after one week. It’s necessary to have a teacher to teach you basic knowledge of the violin, including of posture, fingering and bowing. To master the basic playing skills, you should keep connection with a good teacher who can give you guidance and supervision during the practice. Do not rely a teacher entirely and try to figure out everything on your own practice. How to repair the deformed violin bow? A normal bow should be straight, and the arc between 2 ends less than 17mm. If the bow deformed as curved more than 17mm, it should be repaired by a heating process. We can put the bow above a gas oven, carbon stove, electric stove or alcohol stove, firstly roast it evenly and entirely by moving back and forth and turning around ceaselessly, then pull it to the right arc (less than 17mm) by hand and keep it in cold water until the wood of bow cool down entirely. Tips: the heating and cooling should be entirely, otherwise the repaired bow will deform again easily. How to choose the violin rosin? For beginner, it’s better to choose rosin with copper powder which can help the violin sounds easily. There are different colors of rosin, it’s better to choose rosins in light color for violin especially in cold or wet season, and rosins in dark color are softer relatively and suitable for using in hot or dry season. For the advanced and performance violins, it’s better to choose advanced fine and smooth rosins. How to maintain the violin daily? Keep the violin away from hot and wet environment. If the weather keeps raining, it’s better to loose the strings properly. When the violin stay in wet long time, the tuning pegs maybe can’t be screwed , we should not screw them forcibly until they contract to normal status. If we don’t play the violin for a long time, it’s better to tune the 4 strings averagely 1 pitch lower than the standard pitch. After play, you should take a dry and soft cloth to clean the whole violin, and don’t forget to wipe off rosin on the fingerboard and strings to avoid the long accumulated effect on the sound of violin . After using very long time, the resonator(belly) of violin will accumulate a bit of dust and rosin powder. To clean it, we can put some cooked grains through the F-hole into the resonator and shake the violin for a while then dump the grains out. Don’t screw the hair of bow either too tight to avoid deformation even if break or too loose to affect playing quality. After using, the bow also should be wiped the rosin off, loosed the hair to keep the elasticity of it. If there is dirty on violin, don’t wipe by some organic solvents such as alcohol, gas oil etc., otherwise the paint on the violin will be damaged.
